Few of our customers facing this issue:
Unable to compose/reply a message when accessing Outlook Web Access; however, this is not an issue using other browsers (including IE6). You will also see a red square with an “X” in it when try to compose a new message.
The reason for this issue is due to security - where IE7 do not accept ActiveX and MIME. How to solve it?
The Solution:
1. In OWA, click on the "options" in the left Task Pane.
2. Under “E-mail Security” and Click Install or Upgrade the S/MIME Control. This will download a new add-on.
3. Click “RUN” when asked about the Microsoft Outlook Web Access S/MIME install and security warning.
4. Close and RESTART IE7

ReplyDeleteI'm using IE7 in my laptop. I access OWA directly from my ISP site via corporate web server. Exchange server is with my ISP so I can't use server-side solution. What's strange is there is no problem, i.e. no text box area only red 'x'., with my PC at home, which also uses IE7. Problem only occurs with my laptop. Both have recently updated using Windows Update. Problem occurs whether I'm connected to corporate LAN or when I'm hope directly connected to my ISP. I did the s/MIME update in OWA. I notice thought that when I select Basic instead of Premium, the problem is not present but of course the windows are not exactly the same. Firefox only shows the basic window and not the premium. I've also gone the route of reregistering the two dll and ocx files mentioned in a lot of posts.

I'm the guy with the laptop used in the office. I placed my ISP web address in the trusted sites as suggested, but this had no effect. There is still no text box for New, Forward, or Reply actions, only the red "x". By the way, I checked again and this behavior is the same whether I am using our corporate web proxy server in the office or I am directly connected to the ISP via DSL at home. At home however, the problem does not exist with my desktop PC. Again the problem in my laptop only occurs when I select Premium and not when I choose Basic when I log in. Might it be because of some program that's installed in my laptop but not in my PC? One of these is Sophos Anti-Virus, which is only installed in my laptop. That program came with my laptop but I seem to recall having been able to send a new message or reply using my laptop so may not be the one. I suspect it's IE7 and one of its components but don't know what.
ReplyDeleteI also looked into the last suggestion with the Microsoft download link for updating Exchange 2003. But this is not under my control since I am only a subscriber to my ISP. Besides, the problem doesn't happen with my desktop PC, which also uses IE7, so I assume my ISP's Exchange Server is already updated. Also I use the same ISP as the one used by my company.

We recently moved from hosted mail to an in-house exchange 2003 server at our library. I work from home and use OWA to access my mail on a Vista Home Premium system & IE7. I can compose a message but when I send IE7 freezes and restarts. This appears to be happening only on my laptop because others accessing mail from home with XP & IE7 do not have this problem. I use the desktop client the one day a week I am at the office and all is well when I am on the LAN. How do I stop IE7 from crashing so I can send mail from my home office?
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm having a similar situation. It seems to have occurred after I installed Office 2007. OWA will not allow me to reply or create new messages - just a red x in the body. When I downloaded and installed the S/MIME control file and restarted I.E. (and the computer too). I was able to see that the red x was gone and able to write in an email message, However upon sending the email, IE crashed. I can send you the bug script file if you want (I think)- just let me know where to send. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteWe are also having issues with composing new mail in OWA/Exchange and IE7. What I have discovered is that XP machines without the most recent IE security updates WILL compose a message - no red x box. XP machines WITH the most recent security updates (released in the past week or two) WILL NOT allow us to compose new message. It seems from reading bulletins that a patch to the Exchange server is required for the fix. Unfortunately, nobody with the access to apply the patch is listening yet...

What if you don't control the Exchange server, as in, it's with your ISP? And what if this problem only occurs in your laptop and not with other computers that connect to the same account and ISP?

ReplyDeleteI am having this problem on my laptop, but it is not an option for me to install the fix because I access OWA through a corporate web server. The IT person that is in charge of our server is under the impression that installing the fix would : 1) Require shutting down the entire server, 2) Could potentially affect everyone that is using XP, which is about 98% of staff right now. Does anyone know if either of these things are true? In the meantime, thanks to the person that suggested to use a different web browser. This did not occur to me as a solution, but I have no problem creating, replying to, and forwarding messages using Mozilla Firefox.

ReplyDeleteDepending on how fast your server is, it takes down IIS and the Exchange store for about 2 minutes tops.
It fixes the IE7 Vista issue, and XP with IE7 still works too.
That update for Exchange Server 2003 (KB 924334) does indeed work. I had to install it for a Vista 64-bit user who was having issues accessing OWA with IE7. Hopefully it didn't break anything else. :)

I did what you suggested regarding upgrading the S/MIME control. I can now type a reply to an email (no longer blocked) but when I hit send it freezes. Any other suggestions? I have Vista Home Basic and IE & and use Outlook 2003 Exchange through worksite.

The red x is gone but when I hit SEND IE closes down on me and it re-starts automatically. I also noticed that my keyboard slowed down dramatically when typing in my yahoo email. What could have gone wrong?

It gets to the end, then when I hit "run" and it tries to extract the files, it pops up saying "not enough storage for this command", then "installation failed". I have a brand new computer, how in the world do I not have enough storage already? YIKES and help!

In client side, reinstall the MIME.

I did the update within OWA with the s/MIME which worked for replying but then the crashing problem occurs. Like a number of others here, the fix does allow me to reply but as soon as I hit 'send', IE7 crashes.

There's got to be a fix for this as well.

The patch for Exchange 2000 is on the same page but you have to call 1-800-MICROSOFT to have them email the hotfix to you for free. Just reference knowledgebase article 911829. The fix is not tested and really shouldnt be used on a production server until you test it out first.
THESE FIXES ARE FOR THE MAIL SERVERS ONLY. You really cant fix this problem correctly until your IT Support people fix the mail servers. Show them this response. It worked for our IT company just fine for both Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2000. We support 100's of email domains and everyone is ok with the new fix.

Hi, I came acroos this site out of my desperation on how to fix the problem on both my PCs with OWA. My desktop uses IE 6 on XP SP2, and my laptop uses IE 7 on Vista Home Premium.

Is there any fix planned, or known about, to fix the IE7 crash on Vista desktops when trying to send on OWA (after loading the security patch so that the message can be written of course)?

ReplyDeleteI am Running MS Exchange 2003 on a Server 2003. I had the OWA "red x Issue" and solved it by applying the hotfix 911829 from Microsoft. It was a known issue. The fix worked BUT rose another problem: On Vista, IE7 and XP prof. IE 6, the design looks crooked, as if the style sheet cannot be loaded anymore. In Firefox I can use OWA (no more red X) but it still lokks as if the style sheet is not loaded. Please advise if anyone would know an approach for that. Thanks in advance !
ReplyDeleteThere is a really simple way to fix all this. Simply go to tools > manage add-ons > enable or disable add-on > and under "add-ons that have been used by internet explorer" in the drop down box simply disable "MIME Control Version Class" hit ok then restart internet explorer and this will sort the issue out with out having to update the exchange server. good luck!

I am using a microsoft exchange server and it lets me log in but the message is annoying. This does not happen on pcs that are running ie 6.

I had the Red X problem a while ago. Ran the MIME update in "Option" and was able to reply for a while.

Tried the MIME update again. No help.
It works in Basic mode, but the default is always Premium mode.

I have Windows Vista Home premium, IE7, and am having the outlook web acess problem. When I try to send an email, IE stops responding and then restarts.
ReplyDeleteI d/led the fix and it stated extraction failed, the requesti operation requires elevation.
So I right clicked the file and selected "run as administrator".
Now it says there is not enough room and will not run it.
Is there any help? This problem I see people have had it for over a year now. Earlier post I saw someone say d/l firefox browser on www.mozilla.com. But is there any other solution?

I have Windows Vista Home Premium with Internet Explorer 7 and I originally I couldn't get a new message in webmail to appear without the red "x". I went into options, downloaded the security stuff, and new messages were no longer showing the red "x" but if I close the message, Internet Explorer crashes and restarts. I've tried downloading the fix but even when I'm working as the administrator, it comes back with an error stating, "Not enough storage is available to process this command. Installation did not complete." What can I do now?
I've tried Registry Editor to increase IRPStackSize, but I'm still having the same problem. I do have enough space on my hard drive.
Any suggestions? Please help!

2. your clients in IE7 should open OWA, goto Options>E-Mail security
install or re-install the latest version of the S/MIME Control. When the file download dialog appears, choose Open.

ReplyDeleteMy issue was with Exchange 2003, OWA and IE7. Composing a new message, replying etc...there was a red X in the compose box, although Mozilla worked fine. This fix worked perfectly to take care of OWA and IE7. I can compose in IE again! Thank you again Poo Ching! Keep up the great work.

ReplyDeleteWhile this may be a great help to many, there is a fundamental problem here... IE7 should not be allowed to crash because of a web page problem!
ReplyDeleteI understand that the fix should be deployed on the server and than we nee to install the mime on the laptop running the IE7. But, if I am just an unsuspecting computer user who is trying to send a message, IE7 should give me an error message rather than crash on me!!!
I have no control over what the IT department does on the server!
So now, if I or someone else using my laptop logs into outlook and tries to send a message, than all the open IE windows crash and we loose the information on these pages.
THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ON ANY WEB PAGE, REGARDLESS OF WHAT ANY SERVER SETTINGS ARE!!!
Now, that said, how do I prevent IE7 from crashing, while waiting for the IT department to update their server... which may never happen.

I had this same problem trying to access my company outlook web access email site over vista and ie. I tried both 7 and 8, and downloaded the MIME fix. Nothing worked, I always got the 'red x' and was able to receive and send emails, but not compose them! I gave up on this because I found that mozilla allowed it to work.

I have installed suggested hotfix for Exchange 2003 SP2, stopped IIS manually, allowed installer to stop my BES Blackberry services and MS Information Store, then manually started IIS, Info Store and BES services - on client PC I re-installed M/MIME and all is working fine. Thanks a lot for all suggestions.
ReplyDeleteI have a new Win2008 x64 host running Exchange 2007 SP1. Using IE7 from my client machine (laptop WinXP Pro x64 and IE7), I cannot even get the OWA page to load. If I try via Firefox, I can get the logon page to load, but cannot log on. I will try via IE 6 from a WinXP x86 VM later today. I'm shocked to see that this issue (at least a variant of it) is still around after all this time.
ReplyDeleteHello Poo, i have this problem with my windows SBS 2000 server (Exchange 2000 SP3) and Windows Vista/IE7 clients, unfortunately the kb911929 doesn't work for my exchange server and here in colombia i can't receive answer from microsoft... is there a chance to get the update for the exact version of exchange 2000 server running on windows 2000 server???

OWA2000 and Vista problem: Me too, I sent a request to MS, they asked me to pay $$$. I saw some one mentioned a fix, which they got from MS, It is a password protected zip file (I got the patch), and they didn't post the password. So no use. Another Option I got was copying dhtmled.ocx and triedit.dll from any XP machine with IE7 and registering it on Vista (copy to any folder and run regsvr32 in admin mode). I tried it too, but the RED X is still there, I cant use Vista to read mail from OWA2000. If anyone has a better fix, Please let me know too.
ReplyDeleteWhat you suggest works fine to let you compose a new one or reply to a message. However, after composing it and try to send it, IE7 crashes and my Vista Pro asks me to restart the program.
ReplyDeleteI think the solution is a patch that should be installed on the WebExchange Server, and I need someone to verify that this is THE solution. ON THE SERVER!!! NOT THE PC! Attempting PC install gives you error.

ReplyDeleteSince I doubt my IT department would patch the server for me (since it's working for others), I decided to use the above mentioned "tools > manage add-ons > enable or disable add-on > and under "add-ons that have been used by internet explorer" in the drop down box simply disable "MIME Control Version Class"".

I read through most but not all of the comments here so I don't know if anyone else mentioned that they had messed around with encrypted/signed email, but I once got a certificate and sent a few encrypted and signed emails a while back and I suspect that messing around is what's causing this problem since my coworkers aren't having the same problem as I am. I wonder if this is common among those of us having this problem? I'm on XP SP3 by the way and this was a problem for me on IE7 and IE8. All works fine now! Thanks!
